BWC: Man attempts to stab officers in assisted living facility before fatal OIS

Chicago officers heard the man threatening to stab them if they opened the door; when officers entered the unit and deployed TASERs, the man lunged at them with a knife

CHICAGO — Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability released body-worn camera footage from an officer-involved shooting of a man who lunged at an officer with a knife, ABC 7 Chicago reported.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of May 5. Police had been responding to a 911 call placed by the assisted living facility’s receptionist, reporting a man armed with a knife and experiencing a mental health crisis.

The video shows Chicago Police Department officers arriving at Room 520, where the suspect was staying. Officers spoke to the suspect through the closed door, urging him to accept help and resume his medication. As more officers arrived, they readied their TASERs and prepared to enter the room. During this time, the suspect can be heard making threats.

“He said if we open the door he’s going to stab us,” one officer is heard saying on the video.

At approximately 2:50 a.m., officers entered the suspect’s room and immediately deployed TASERs. The suspect is seen lunging at officers with a knife, prompting police to open fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

Hours later, another resident at the facility was found dead in his room, having been fatally stabbed. The suspect killed in the officer-involved shooting is believed to have been responsible.
